Today I attended the Urban Chicken Keeping evening at Hen Corner in Brentford, Middlesex. Being welcome into a warm family home greeted by the most friendly cat ever, with rooms filled of smells of fresh cooking and baking, it was a comforting, homely feeling. As I was led through a cosy kitchen into a conservative and into an open garden, more sense were engaged as you were created by 17 hens roaming free in the garden.
Sara was a great host and welcomed us with freshly made egg mayonnaise brioche sandwiches, absolutely dive, accompanied by home made Pimms. What a midweek treat. The weather also held with the sun just setting and the bumble bees busy collecting the last of the pollen from the lavender bushes.
The course provided us an overview on different types of chickens and their pros and cons for keeping each with an overview of what is required to keep them in your back garden. The Omlet Chicken Coops really are the best ones and Sara has three different ones to keep her 17 hens in. All in all it the maintenance cost and upkeep of the chickens is very low (approx. £5 per 4 chickens a week) when you think that each chicken will produce an average of one egg per day. So you could even be making a healthy profit towards your food bill every week.
If you want a hands on, real life experience on how to keep urban chickens, we highly recommend booking and attending one of Sara's courses https://www.hencorner.com/courses/ such as:
Various Baking & Cookery Classes
Cider & Apple WineMaking
We thoroughly enjoyed the evening with Sara, her husband, cat and chickens and hope to be back for another course soon.
